The Royal Dragoon Guards
The Royal Dragoon Guards were formed in 1992 from the amalgamation of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards — two regiments whose combined lineage stretches back to the late 17th century and encompasses some of the most celebrated cavalry actions in British military history.
The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards were among the first British troops to land in Normandy on D-Day, 6th June 1944, their tanks coming ashore on Gold Beach in the opening hours of the invasion. The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards served with distinction in the Western Desert and in North-West Europe, fighting from Normandy to the Rhine. Together, the regiments that formed the Royal Dragoon Guards carried a battle honour list that spans Blenheim, Waterloo, the Boer War, and both World Wars.
Today the Royal Dragoon Guards are an armoured cavalry regiment based in York, operating in the reconnaissance and strike roles that have defined British cavalry since the age of the horse. Fast, flexible, and equally capable in combat and in support operations, they maintain the tradition of the dragoon — the soldier equally at home mounted or on foot — in the modern era.
