The Space Shuttle built by Rockwell International in California, first flew on 12th April 1981. It was the first ever reusable spacecraft system and the type completed 135 missions between the 5 Shuttles that were built. They were all named after historic ships: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. A sixth was built for gliding trials in Earth's atmosphere and was never intended for flight in space. The Shuttle was retired in 2011 with Atlantis having the honour of the final flight.
