The Royal Navy
The Royal Navy is the oldest of the British armed services, with a continuous history stretching back to the reign of Henry VIII in the early 16th century. For over 500 years it has been the instrument by which Britain projected power, protected trade, and secured the sea lanes on which the nation's survival has always depended.
Its defining moments are woven into the fabric of British history. The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The battles of the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar under Nelson — where the signal "England expects that every man will do his duty" was hoisted before one of the most decisive naval engagements in history. The Grand Fleet at Jutland in 1916. The Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War, where the Navy fought a grinding, four-year campaign against the U-boat to keep Britain supplied and in the fight. The Falklands in 1982, where a task force was assembled and dispatched 8,000 miles in a matter of days.
Today the Royal Navy operates aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, destroyers, and the full spectrum of modern maritime capability — smaller than it once was, but no less formidable. The Senior Service endures.
