The Royal Military Police
The Royal Military Police — the Red Caps — are the British Army's corps of military police, with a history that traces back to the office of Provost Marshal, first established in the 13th century. For over 700 years, the Provost function has been an essential part of the British military machine: maintaining discipline, controlling movement, protecting personnel, and upholding the rule of law in environments where civilian policing cannot reach.
The RMP received their royal title in 1946 in recognition of their service in the Second World War, during which Military Police personnel served in every theatre — controlling the movement of millions of troops, managing prisoners of war, investigating war crimes, and maintaining order in the chaos of active operations. The red cap that gives them their nickname became one of the most recognisable sights on every front.
Today the Royal Military Police operate across the full spectrum of military policing: close protection, serious crime investigation, counter-intelligence support, traffic control on operations, and working alongside civilian police forces and international agencies in some of the world's most demanding environments. Their motto, Exemplo Ducemus — By Example Shall We Lead — sets the standard they are expected to meet in everything they do.
