The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
Every officer commissioned into the British Army passes through the gates of Sandhurst. Founded in its current form in 1947 through the merger of the Royal Military College Sandhurst and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich — institutions with roots stretching back to 1741 and 1741 respectively — RMAS has shaped the character and leadership of the British Army for generations.
The 44-week commissioning course is one of the most demanding leadership programmes in the world. It is not primarily about military tactics — it is about character. Sandhurst produces officers who can lead under pressure, make decisions with incomplete information, and take responsibility for the lives of the men and women under their command. Its motto, Serve to Lead, is not a slogan — it is a philosophy that every graduate carries for the rest of their career.
Among Sandhurst's alumni are kings, heads of state, and some of the most distinguished military commanders in modern history. Over 100 nations send their officer cadets to train here, making it a truly international centre of military excellence. To wear the Sandhurst colours is to be part of that tradition.
