The Royal Marines
The Royal Marines are the United Kingdom's commando force and the amphibious troops of the Royal Navy — an elite within an elite, with a history stretching back to 1664. Per Mare, Per Terram: By Sea and By Land. It is not a motto that requires elaboration. The Royal Marines have fought on every ocean and on every continent, in conditions that would defeat most soldiers before they reached the objective.
Their record is extraordinary. The assault on the Heights of Abraham at Quebec in 1759. The Napoleonic Wars at sea and ashore. Gallipoli. The Arctic convoys of the Second World War. The Falklands in 1982, where 3 Commando Brigade conducted one of the most demanding amphibious and mountain warfare operations in modern military history — yomping across East Falkland in appalling weather to retake Port Stanley. Iraq and Afghanistan, where the Marines operated in some of the most hostile environments on earth.
The green beret is among the hardest military qualifications to earn in the world. The commando tests — the endurance course, the nine-mile speed march, the thirty-mile yomp — are conducted in all weathers on Dartmoor, and the standard required does not change. Those who wear it have earned it without question.
