The Royal Green Jackets

The Royal Green Jackets were formed in 1966 from the amalgamation of three of the most distinguished light infantry regiments in the British Army — the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and the Rifle Brigade. Each brought with it a lineage stretching back to the Napoleonic Wars and beyond, and a tradition of light infantry tactics, individual initiative, and speed of movement that set the rifleman apart from the line infantry soldier.

The RGJ inherited that tradition in full. In their 41 years of existence, the regiment served in Northern Ireland throughout the Troubles — one of the most sustained and demanding operational commitments in the Army's post-war history — as well as in the Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq. They were known for their pace, their professionalism, and the fierce esprit de corps that characterised the rifle regiments from which they descended.

In 2007, the Royal Green Jackets were amalgamated with the Devon and Dorset Regiment, the Light Infantry, and the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment to form The Rifles — the largest regiment in the British Army. The black buttons, the rifle green, and the traditions of the RGJ live on in The Rifles today.
