The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was formed in 1942, born out of the urgent need to maintain and repair the increasingly complex equipment on which the modern British Army depended. As warfare became more mechanised and technical, it was clear that a dedicated corps of engineers, craftsmen, and technicians was essential — not just to fix what broke, but to keep the Army fighting.
From the tank workshops of the Western Desert to the forward repair teams of the Falklands, from the jungles of Borneo to the streets of Basra, REME has always been where the Army needs it most. Their work is rarely seen by the public — but without it, the guns fall silent, the vehicles stop, and the aircraft stay on the ground. Every Challenger tank that fires, every Apache that lifts off, every piece of precision weaponry that functions in the field does so in part because of REME.
The Corps motto — Arte et Marte, By Skill and By Fighting — captures the dual nature of the REME soldier: a craftsman first, a soldier always. REME personnel are embedded throughout the Army, working alongside the units they support, and when required, fighting alongside them too.
This tie is for the artificers, the technicians, the vehicle mechanics, and the avionics engineers — the people who keep the British Army in the fight.
