The Royal Corps of Signals

No modern army fights without communications, and the Royal Corps of Signals has been the British Army's nervous system since its formation in 1920. Born from the hard lessons of the First World War — where signallers laid and maintained telephone lines under the heaviest enemy fire, often at the cost of their lives — the Corps was established as a separate arm to give communications the professional standing it had earned.

In the Second World War, Signals personnel served in every theatre, from the Western Desert to the jungles of Burma, keeping the chain of command intact under conditions that tested every piece of equipment and every man who operated it. The speed and reliability of communications could determine the outcome of an engagement — and the Corps delivered, earning a reputation for technical excellence and operational resilience that has never diminished.

Today the Royal Corps of Signals encompasses some of the most highly trained communications and cyber specialists in the world, providing IT infrastructure, electronic warfare, and secure communications to the British Army across every operational theatre. Their motto — Certa Cito, Swift and Sure — has been earned in every conflict since 1920 and remains as relevant as ever.
