The Royal Artillery

The Royal Artillery — the Gunners — is the largest regiment in the British Army and one of its oldest, with a history of continuous service stretching back to 1716. From the siege guns of the Napoleonic Wars to the field artillery of the Western Front, from the anti-aircraft batteries of the Blitz to the precision guided munitions of modern operations, the Royal Artillery has been at the heart of British firepower for over three centuries.

The Gunners hold a unique distinction in the British Army: they carry no Colours. Their motto — Ubique, Everywhere — is their explanation. The Royal Artillery has served in so many campaigns, on so many fronts, that no single Colour could carry the honour. Their guns are their Colours, and they have never been lost.

In the Second World War, Royal Artillery regiments served in every theatre — from the Western Desert, where the 25-pounder field gun became the backbone of British firepower, to the anti-aircraft batteries that defended British cities during the Blitz. In Korea, the Falklands, the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the Gunners have been present on every operation the British Army has undertaken. Ubique is not a boast. It is a statement of fact.
