The Royal Army Veterinary Corps
The Royal Army Veterinary Corps has served the British Army since 1796, when the first veterinary surgeons were appointed to care for the horses on which the Army depended. For much of military history, the horse was as vital a piece of equipment as any weapon — and the men of the RAVC kept them fit to fight.
The Corps earned its Royal prefix in 1918, in recognition of its outstanding service during the First World War, where it treated over two and a half million animals — horses, mules, camels, and dogs — on every front. The scale of that work is almost impossible to comprehend; without the RAVC, the Army's ability to move, supply, and fight would have been severely compromised.
Today the RAVC remains a small but highly specialised Corps. Its personnel include veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses, and military working dog handlers — caring for the Army's dogs, horses, and regimental mascots, and standing ready to support with animal transport in austere environments. Military working dogs serve on operations worldwide, detecting explosives and providing force protection, and the RAVC handlers who work alongside them form one of the most distinctive partnerships in the British Army.
The Corps motto — Innoxia Cura, Harmless Care — reflects a quiet dedication that has never sought the spotlight, but has always been essential.
