The Royal Air Force
Founded on 1st April 1918, the Royal Air Force was the world's first independent air force — born in the final year of the First World War from the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. From that moment, air power would never again be an afterthought.
The RAF's finest hour came in the summer of 1940. During the Battle of Britain, outnumbered Fighter Command pilots — many of them barely out of training, many from across the Commonwealth and occupied Europe — held the Luftwaffe at bay and denied Hitler the air superiority he needed to invade. Churchill's words have never faded: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
From the strategic bombing campaign over Germany to the Berlin Airlift, from the Falklands to operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond, the RAF has remained at the forefront of Britain's defence for over a century. Today it operates some of the most advanced aircraft in the world, from the F-35B Lightning to the Typhoon, while continuing to deliver humanitarian aid and project power across the globe.
The RAF motto — Per Ardua ad Astra, Through Adversity to the Stars — says everything about the service's character. This tie carries that spirit.
