Dakota is the name the British gave to the American built Douglas C-47 Skytrain, which was developed from the DC-3 airliner into a military transporter. Synonymous with the D-Day landings in Normandy on the 6th June 1944, approximately 2000 of the type were used to drop paratroopers and tow gliders. The Dakota also played vital roles in other theatres such as Burma and Guadalcanal. Over 10,000 C-47’s were built in total and they served with over 100 nations. The RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial flight still operate one today alongside its Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes.
