The Combined Australians

The Combined Australians was a composite unit formed during the Second Boer War (1899–1902), bringing together volunteer contingents from the various Australian colonies — and later states — into a single fighting force. Before Federation in 1901, Australia's military contributions to the Empire were organised at colonial level, and the Combined Australians represented one of the earliest expressions of a unified Australian military identity on the world stage.

These men served in the harsh veldt of South Africa as mounted infantry, demonstrating the bushcraft, horsemanship, and tenacity that would later define the Australian Imperial Force in the First World War. The Boer War contingents are widely regarded as the crucible of the ANZAC spirit — and the Combined Australians were at the heart of it.

This tie is a rare piece of neckwear for those with a deep interest in Australian military history, the Boer War, or the story of how a nation found its martial identity.
