The Ceylon Mounted Rifles
The Ceylon Mounted Rifles was a volunteer cavalry regiment raised in British Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) during the late 19th century. Formed to provide a mobile defence force for the island, the regiment drew its officers and men from the colonial planting and merchant communities — men who knew the terrain and were accustomed to the saddle. Though relatively short-lived as a mounted unit, the CMR represented the spirit of colonial volunteerism and the broader tradition of Imperial light cavalry that served across the British Empire's far-flung territories.
Today, the regiment's tie is a rare piece of neckwear history — worn by those with a connection to Ceylon, Sri Lanka, or simply a deep appreciation for the lesser-known corners of British military heritage.
