The Welsh Cavalry
1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards formed on 1 January 1959 through the amalgamation of the 1st King's Dragoon Guards and the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays). Known as the Welsh Cavalry, the regiment represents Wales and the Border Counties and serves in the light cavalry role, specialising in mounted reconnaissance.
The Habsburg Eagle
The double-headed imperial eagle was inherited from the 1st King's Dragoon Guards. In 1896, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria became Colonel-in-Chief and granted the regiment the privilege of wearing the Habsburg eagle on its headdress. It ceased to be worn during the First World War and was restored to the cap badge in 1937, passing to the QDG on amalgamation in 1959.
The crowned Austro-Hungarian eagle is surmounted by the Austrian Imperial Crown, holds an orb and sceptre, and carries the Arms of the Austrian Empire on its central shield.
