The Queen's Royal Lancers

The Queen's Royal Lancers were formed in 1993 from the amalgamation of the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers and the 17th/21st Lancers — and it is from the 17th Lancers that the regiment inherited one of the most famous badges and mottoes in the British Army. The skull and crossbones — the Death or Glory badge — was adopted by the 17th Lancers in memory of General Wolfe, who fell at the moment of victory at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. It has been worn with pride ever since.

The 17th Lancers charged at Balaclava in 1854 as part of the Light Brigade — one of the most celebrated and catastrophic cavalry charges in military history, immortalised by Tennyson and remembered by every generation since. The regiment that emerged from that charge, and from the amalgamations that followed, carried the Death or Glory tradition through the Boer War, both World Wars, and into the armoured cavalry role of the modern era.

The Queen's Royal Lancers served in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan before their amalgamation in 2015 with the 9th/12th Royal Lancers to form the Royal Lancers. The skull and crossbones, and the motto Death or Glory, live on.
