The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment)

The Buffs are one of the oldest infantry regiments in the British Army, with origins stretching back to 1572 — making them among the very first English regiments to be raised for continuous service. Their name derives from the buff-coloured facings on their uniforms, a distinction they carried for centuries and which set them apart on every battlefield they crossed.

Over four centuries of service, The Buffs fought in an extraordinary range of campaigns. They served in the Low Countries in the late 16th century, in Tangier, in Flanders, at Blenheim and Ramillies under Marlborough, in the American War of Independence, in the Napoleonic Wars, in India, in the Crimea, in South Africa during the Boer War, and on the Western Front and in the Middle East during the First World War. Few regiments can claim a record of service so long or so varied.

In 1961, The Buffs were amalgamated with the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment to form the Queen's Own Buffs, and later became part of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. But the buff facings, the regimental traditions, and the pride of the Royal East Kent Regiment live on in those who carry the connection.

To wear this tie is to wear over 450 years of English military history.
