History.

The DRB Class 52, known in Poland as the TY-2, is a German war locomotive built during World War II. Developed as part of the Kriegslokomotiven (war locomotives) programme, it aimed to address the urgent need for reliable and efficient rail transport across occupied territories and the Eastern Front. Introduced in 1942, the Class 52 was a simplified and robust version of the pre-war Class 50, designed to be produced quickly and with fewer resources. Over 6,300 units were manufactured by various European factories, making it one of the most numerous locomotive classes ever built. The TY-2 designation was used in Poland, where many of these locomotives remained post-war, serving in freight and passenger roles well into the late 20th century. The Class 52's durability and adaptability have made it a notable example of wartime engineering, with several preserved units still operational in heritage railways today.
