The Royal Welch Fusiliers

One of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments in the British Army, the Royal Welch Fusiliers trace their origins to 1689, when they were raised for service under William III. In over three centuries of continuous service, the regiment fought in some of the most significant conflicts in British military history — the War of the Spanish Succession, the American War of Independence, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, and both World Wars.

Their record in the First World War was extraordinary. The regiment raised 35 battalions and was awarded 14 Victoria Crosses — a testament to the courage of the men who served under the claret and blue. Among their most famous sons was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who served with the RWF on the Western Front and whose writing gave voice to the experience of the ordinary soldier in a way that has never been surpassed.

In more recent times, the Royal Welch Fusiliers served in Northern Ireland throughout the Troubles, in Bosnia during the Balkans conflict, and in Iraq. In 2006, the regiment was amalgamated with the Royal Regiment of Wales to form the Royal Welsh — but the traditions, the flash, and the claret and blue colours of the Royal Welch Fusiliers live on.

With their traditional home in North Wales and a history that spans continents and centuries, this tie is worn with the pride that 14 Victoria Crosses demand.
