The Royal Tank Regiment
The Royal Tank Regiment is the oldest tank regiment in the world — and it was born in the mud and wire of the Western Front. On 15th September 1916, at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on the Somme, tanks entered combat for the first time in history. The men who crewed those first lumbering Mark I machines — operating in conditions of almost unimaginable heat, noise, and danger — changed the nature of warfare forever.
Originally formed as the Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps, the Tank Corps was established as a separate arm in 1917 and became the Royal Tank Corps in 1923, before receiving its current title in 1939. By the Second World War, the RTR had grown into a formidable force, fighting in the Western Desert under O'Connor and later Monty, in Italy, and in the North-West Europe campaign from Normandy to the Rhine. The black beret — first adopted by tank crews for practical reasons in the early days — became one of the most recognisable symbols in the British Army, later adopted by the Royal Armoured Corps as a whole.
Today the Royal Tank Regiment operates the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and continues to embody the qualities that defined it from the beginning: innovation, resilience, and the willingness to go first. Their motto — Fear Naught — was earned in the fire of the Somme and has never been surrendered.
