The Punjab Frontier Force
The Punjab Frontier Force was one of the most celebrated irregular corps of the British Indian Army — raised in 1849 following the annexation of the Punjab after the Second Anglo-Sikh War, and tasked with garrisoning and patrolling the North-West Frontier: the vast, mountainous borderland between British India and Afghanistan that would test soldiers of every generation who served there.
Known simply as the "Piffers" to those who served in its ranks, the Force comprised infantry, cavalry, and artillery units drawn from the martial peoples of the Punjab and the Frontier — Sikhs, Punjabi Muslims, Pathans, and Gurkhas among them. They were frontier soldiers in the truest sense: operating in some of the most demanding terrain on earth, against opponents who knew every pass and valley, in a campaign that was never truly won and never truly lost.
The Punjab Frontier Force served with distinction in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, in the numerous frontier expeditions of the late 19th century, and in both World Wars — where its battalions fought in Mesopotamia, Palestine, East Africa, and on the Western Front. The Force was disbanded at Partition in 1947, its units divided between the armies of India and Pakistan. The tie is a connection to one of the most storied chapters in the history of British India.
