  • History
The Panzer VIII Maus was a German super-heavy tank developed during the Second World War. Conceived by Ferdinand Porsche and commissioned by Hitler, the Maus was designed to be the most powerful tank ever built. Development began in 1942, with the aim of creating an almost invulnerable behemoth, armed with a 128 mm gun and heavily armoured. Two prototypes were constructed by 1944, but the Maus never saw combat. Its massive weight—nearly 190 tonnes—made it impractical for battlefield use, as it was too heavy for most bridges and difficult to transport. Although the project showcased advanced engineering, it ultimately reflected the unrealistic ambitions of Nazi Germany. Today, the surviving prototype is displayed at the Kubinka Tank Museum in Russia.
