The Indian Army

The British Indian Army was, at its peak, the largest volunteer army in history — and one of the most formidable fighting forces the world has ever seen. Drawn from the martial peoples of the subcontinent — Sikhs, Gurkhas, Rajputs, Jats, Dogras, Punjabi Muslims, Pathans, and many others — it was an army of extraordinary diversity, bound together by shared discipline, regimental loyalty, and the professional pride of the soldier.

From the campaigns of the East India Company in the 18th century through to the end of the Second World War, the Indian Army served across an astonishing range of theatres. It fought in Egypt and the Sudan, in Afghanistan and on the North-West Frontier, in China, in East Africa, in Mesopotamia and Palestine in the First World War, and in North Africa, Italy, Burma, and the Pacific in the Second. At its wartime peak in 1945, the Indian Army numbered over two and a half million men — the largest volunteer force ever assembled.

The General pattern tie is worn by those whose connection to the Indian Army spans multiple regiments or corps, or who carry the broader tradition of British India's military heritage. It is a tie for those who understand what that army was, what it achieved, and what it meant to those who served in it.
