History.

The DR BR 03 steam locomotive, a prominent symbol of German railway history, was developed in the early 1930s by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Designed primarily for express passenger service, the BR 03 was a lighter variant of the heavier BR 01, making it suitable for routes with axle load limitations. The first unit rolled off the production line in 1930, featuring a 4-6-2 Pacific wheel arrangement, which balanced speed and traction effectively.

With a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph), the BR 03 became a reliable workhorse on mainline routes, particularly excelling in hauling express trains. Its sleek design and efficient performance made it a favourite among rail enthusiasts and operators alike. By 1938, a total of 298 units were built, showcasing the locomotive's significant role in pre-war German rail transport.

The BR 03 continued to serve post-war Germany, with many units remaining operational into the 1960s. Today, preserved examples of the BR 03 can be seen in railway museums, celebrated for their engineering excellence and historical significance.
