History.

The German battleship Tirpitz, sister ship to the famed Bismarck, was a formidable naval asset during World War II. Launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1941, Tirpitz was the largest battleship built by Germany, armed with eight 15-inch guns and heavily armoured. Its primary role was to threaten Allied convoys in the Arctic and North Atlantic, aiming to disrupt supply lines between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Stationed in Norwegian fjords for much of the war, Tirpitz's mere presence required the Allies to allocate significant resources to counter the threat it posed. Multiple operations were launched against her, including daring British midget submarine attacks and numerous air raids. On November 12, 1944, Tirpitz was finally sunk by British Lancaster bombers carrying 12,000-pound Tallboy bombs during Operation Catechism. The sinking of Tirpitz marked the end of the German surface fleet significant threat in the war.
