The Royal Engineers

The Royal Engineers — the Sappers — are one of the oldest and most versatile corps in the British Army, with a history of continuous service stretching back to 1716. Where other regiments fight, the Royal Engineers make it possible: building bridges under fire, clearing minefields, breaching fortifications, constructing field hospitals and airstrips, and providing the infrastructure on which every modern military operation depends.

Their record in battle is as distinguished as any fighting regiment. At Waterloo, RE officers directed the defence of Hougoumont farm — a position whose holding was critical to Wellington's victory. In the Crimea, the Sappers built the railway that supplied the siege of Sevastopol. On the Western Front, RE tunnelling companies fought a subterranean war beneath no man's land, culminating in the detonation of nineteen mines beneath the German lines at Messines in 1917 — one of the largest planned explosions in history. In the Second World War, the Royal Engineers built the Bailey bridge, one of the most important military engineering innovations of the 20th century, which allowed Allied forces to cross rivers and obstacles across every theatre of the war.

Today the Royal Engineers encompass combat engineers, bomb disposal specialists, divers, surveyors, communications engineers, and a dozen other trades — the most technically diverse corps in the British Army. Their motto, Ubique — Everywhere — is shared with the Royal Artillery, and earned with equal justification.
