The Merchant Navy

Britain is an island nation, and the Merchant Navy has always been its lifeline. With roots stretching back to the 1700s, the Merchant Navy carried the trade, the troops, and the supplies that kept the country connected to the world — and in two World Wars, it kept the country alive.

During the Second World War, Merchant Navy crews faced some of the most sustained and lethal conditions of any service. Sailing in convoy across the North Atlantic, the Arctic, and the Mediterranean, they were hunted by U-boats, attacked from the air, and offered little of the protection afforded to the Royal Navy. Over 36,000 Merchant Navy personnel lost their lives between 1939 and 1945 — a casualty rate higher than any of the armed services. They wore no uniform that the public recognised, received no campaign medals for years, and were largely forgotten in the immediate post-war period.

That began to change. Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day is observed on 3rd September each year — the date in 1939 when the first British ship, the SS Athenia, was sunk by a German U-boat just hours after war was declared. Today, Merchant Navy veterans join the armed forces at Remembrance ceremonies, their sacrifice finally given the recognition it always deserved.

This tie is a mark of that service — worn with pride by those who sailed, and those who remember.
