History.
The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a groundbreaking reconnaissance aircraft developed in the 1960s by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division. Designed to outpace and outclimb threats, it flew at speeds over Mach 3 and altitudes above 85,000 feet, making it virtually untouchable by enemy defences. First flown in 1966, the SR-71 quickly saw action during the Vietnam War, where it gathered crucial intelligence on North Vietnamese positions and supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Its speed and stealthy profile meant that no SR-71 was ever lost to enemy fire, despite repeated attempts with missiles. Beyond Vietnam, the Blackbird continued to provide vital reconnaissance throughout the Cold War until its retirement in 1998, cementing its place as one of history’s most advanced aircraft.
