History.
The Akagi was a renowned aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Originally laid down as an Amagi-class battlecruiser in 1920, the Akagi was converted into an aircraft carrier following the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, which imposed limitations on naval armament. Commissioned in 1927, the Akagi became a key component of Japan’s carrier fleet.
Notably, the Akagi played a pivotal role in the early Pacific campaigns, including the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, where its aircraft significantly contributed to the surprise assault that propelled the United States into the war. The Akagi also participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, a turning point in the Pacific Theatre.
During the Battle of Midway, the Akagi was critically damaged by American dive bombers and subsequently scuttled by Japanese forces to prevent its capture. The Akagi's legacy endures as a symbol of Japan’s naval prowess and wartime strategy.
